Shaheen Afridi has received a no-objection certificate to play his first Lanka Premier League season for Kandy Royals, after missing Pakistan’s Tests.
A profile of Shahid Afridi, the Pakistan all-rounder known as Boom Boom for his ODI record century at 16 and 2009 World T20 final heroics.
Shahid Afridi, nicknamed Boom Boom, was one of the most entertaining players of his era. An aggressive batter and a wicket-taking leg-spinner, he played for Pakistan for more than two decades and became a hugely popular figure in the country.
Afridi came from the Khyber region of Pakistan, and his exact birth year has been a topic of discussion; the officially recorded date is 1980. He debuted in one-day internationals in 1996 and in his second match, against Sri Lanka in Nairobi, hit a century from 37 balls, which was then a world record for the fastest ODI hundred.
Afridi was a hard-hitting batter who relished taking on bowlers early in his innings, and his strokeplay was marked by big sixes, particularly over the leg side. His leg-spin was quicker than most and relied on variations, which made him a threat in the middle overs. He fielded energetically and was known for his flamboyant celebrations.
He played a key role in the 2009 World Twenty20 victory in England, and in the final at Lord’s he made an unbeaten 54 and took a wicket as Pakistan beat Sri Lanka. He captained Pakistan in the 2011 World Cup, where he was the joint leading wicket-taker with 21 wickets as Pakistan reached the semi-finals.
He also played Test cricket, including a century against India at Bangalore in 2005, and retired from the Test format in 2010. In franchise cricket, he played for Deccan Chargers in the IPL and for Karachi Kings and Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League.
Afridi retired from international cricket in 2018. He is remembered for his unpredictable batting and as one of the first Pakistani players to be widely recognised as a limited-overs entertainer. His foundation work and his later television appearances have kept him in public view.
The nickname comes from his explosive hitting, especially his early record-breaking ODI century.
