South Africa Cricket Team: History, Governing Body and Major Honours
Profile of the South Africa national cricket team: Test debut in 1889, isolation during apartheid, the 1991 return, the 1998 title and the Proteas’ record.
The South Africa national cricket team, known as the Proteas after the national flower, has been among the leading Test sides for much of its history, with a reputation for strong fast bowling, excellent fielding and disciplined batting. The team is administered by Cricket South Africa.
Early history
South Africa played its first Test match against England in Port Elizabeth in March 1889, making it the third nation to play Test cricket after England and Australia. Later, outstanding players such as Graeme Pollock, Barry Richards and Mike Procter built reputations as some of the best of their generation.
Isolation during apartheid
From 1970 South Africa was excluded from international cricket because of the apartheid system, which also divided domestic cricket along racial lines. The team did not play official internationals for more than two decades, and many players were denied the chance to show their full ability on the world stage. The long absence is regarded as one of the most significant interruptions to a national team in the sport’s history.
Return in 1991
South Africa was readmitted to world cricket in 1991 and played its first one-day international against India in Kolkata in November of that year. The team went on to play in the 1992 World Cup, where it reached the semi-finals. Test cricket resumed with a series against the West Indies in Barbados in 1992. The side quickly became established as a leading force, with Hansie Cronje and Allan Donald among the central figures of the 1990s.
Honours
South Africa won the ICC KnockOut Trophy, now known as the Champions Trophy, in 1998 in Bangladesh, beating the West Indies in the final. The team has reached the semi-finals of the ODI World Cup on several occasions and finished as runners-up in the 2024 T20 World Cup, losing the final to India in Barbados. In Test cricket the side was the top-ranked team in the late 2000s and early 2010s, and recorded series wins in Australia in 2008 and 2016.
Players of note
Batters such as Jacques Kallis, Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers, and bowlers such as Dale Steyn, Shaun Pollock and Allan Donald, have been among the best in the world in their era.
