Australia selector Andrew McDonald says Cameron Green’s numbers lack context and that batting comes first as he vies for the No.5 spot against Bangladesh.
Profile of Allan Donald, the South African fast bowler nicknamed White Lightning who took 330 Test wickets and starred for Warwickshire in county cricket.
Allan Donald, nicknamed “White Lightning”, was South Africa’s outstanding fast bowler in the years after the country’s return to international cricket. Tall, fast and fiercely competitive, he led the pace attack for most of the 1990s and remains one of the best-known bowlers the country has produced.
Born in Bloemfontein in 1966, Donald developed through domestic cricket for Free State. Because of South Africa’s sporting isolation he began his career in county cricket, joining Warwickshire in the late 1980s, where he became a prominent overseas player. When South Africa returned to international cricket in 1991 he was among the first players picked, and he played in the side’s first Test after readmission, against West Indies in Bridgetown in 1992.
Donald bowled with a fluent, whippy action, delivering the ball at high pace with accuracy and late swing, and could reverse the ball as it aged. He was particularly dangerous in the opening overs and in short spells when the conditions suited. His aggressive manner on the field was matched by an ability to produce sustained speed.
Donald finished with 330 wickets in 72 Tests and 272 wickets in 164 one-day internationals. For Warwickshire he was a leading force in the club’s success in 1994, when it won three major trophies in one season. He also played in the 1999 World Cup, where the semi-final against Australia at Edgbaston, which finished tied, ended with him run out in a dramatic final over, a moment widely remembered by cricket followers.
He retired from international cricket in 2002, and later worked as a bowling coach with several national sides.
Donald’s legacy is as one of the fastest and most skilful bowlers of his era. Together with Shaun Pollock and, later, Dale Steyn, he helped build South Africa’s reputation for producing high-quality fast bowlers.
