Sri Lanka Women Cricket Team: History and 2024 Asia Cup Title

An overview of the Sri Lanka women’s cricket team, including its World Cup debut, white-ball progress and its first Women’s Asia Cup title in 2024.

Sri Lanka’s women’s team has developed steadily since it first appeared at global events in the 1990s. In recent years it has become a competitive white-ball side, capable of beating the sport’s leading nations.

Early years

The team made its Women’s World Cup debut in 1997, in a tournament held in India. The squad has played very few Test matches, so it is best known for its record in one-day and T20 cricket. Sri Lanka Cricket oversees the team, as well as the domestic competitions.

Asia Cup success

The Women’s Asia Cup has been the stage for Sri Lanka’s most important achievement. They reached the final in 2022 but lost to India. In July 2024, on home soil at Dambulla, they won their first title by beating India by eight wickets in the final, a landmark day for the sport in the country.

World events

Sri Lanka has played in the T20 World Cup since the early editions and in several ODI World Cups, though qualification has not always been straightforward. The team has often been competitive with higher-ranked sides but has sometimes struggled to sustain that form through a whole tournament.

Development

The women’s game in Sri Lanka has benefited from the growth of domestic competitions and from increased exposure through the Asia Cup and bilateral series. Building a larger pool of players and giving them regular opportunities remains an important task.

This overview does not cover current squads, captaincy, rankings or results after 2024.
