Pakistan Women Cricket Team: History, Asian Games Gold and Growth

An overview of the Pakistan women’s cricket team, from its World Cup debut in 1997 and Test debut in 1998 to Asian Games gold in 2010 and 2014.

Pakistan’s women’s team has built its international profile over a little more than two decades, rising from a new entrant to a regular competitor at global tournaments and continental events.

Entry to international cricket

Pakistan Women made their World Cup debut in 1997, a tournament held in India, and played their first Test match in 1998. The team has played relatively few Tests since, with most of its international activity coming in one-day and T20 formats. It is run by the Pakistan Cricket Board.

Asian success

The team’s biggest successes have come at the Asian Games, where it won gold in the women’s cricket event in both 2010 in Guangzhou and 2014 in Incheon. These victories gave the sport in the country a major boost, and the squad was made up of players who would become well known in the women’s game.

World events

Pakistan has appeared in the T20 World Cup from the first edition in 2009 and has taken part in multiple ODI World Cups, including the 2022 tournament in New Zealand. The team has often faced strong opposition at these events, and building depth against top sides remains an ongoing aim.

Challenges and growth

Women’s cricket in Pakistan has faced challenges around infrastructure, funding and access, but the PCB has expanded domestic competitions and central contracts in recent years. International fixtures at home and abroad provide key experience for emerging players.

This overview does not cover current squads, captaincy, rankings or results after 2024.
