Profile of Dwayne Bravo, the Trinidad all-rounder, two-time T20 World Cup winner with West Indies, death-bowling specialist and long-time Chennai Super Kings player.
Dwayne Bravo is one of the defining all-rounders of the T20 era. A skilful bowler in the closing overs and a hard-hitting lower-order batter, he was part of both West Indies teams that won the T20 World Cup and became one of the most successful players in franchise cricket worldwide.
Born in Santa Cruz, Trinidad, in 1983, Bravo made his international debut for West Indies in 2004. He played Tests and one-day internationals early on, and then became one of the best-known figures in the shortest format as T20 leagues spread across the world.
Bravo’s bowling relied on variation. He had an excellent slower ball, used cutters and changes of pace, and was considered one of the best death bowlers of his generation. With the bat he was a clean striker who could finish an innings, and he was also a quick, lively fielder. He was known as a showman and a popular figure on and off the field.
Bravo was a member of the West Indies sides that won the T20 World Cup in 2012 and 2016. He played in both finals and contributed with the ball and bat in the tournaments.
In franchise cricket he became one of the most successful T20 players in the world. He played for Chennai Super Kings for many seasons, winning the Indian Premier League with them more than once, and also played for Mumbai Indians. In the Caribbean Premier League he was a leading player for Trinbago Knight Riders. He was among the leading wicket-takers in the history of T20 cricket, as of the end of 2024, and he travelled to leagues in many countries.
He also recorded the song Champion, which became an anthem for West Indies celebrations after the 2016 triumph.
Bravo retired from international cricket in 2021 and later from all professional playing, taking up coaching roles in franchise cricket. He is remembered as an all-rounder who helped define the specialist death-bowling craft in T20, and as a leading member of a generation of Caribbean players who succeeded in leagues around the globe. His popularity among fans of different teams reflects both his skill and his personality.
