Francois du Plessis, known worldwide as Faf, was born in 1984 in Pretoria. He worked his way through the domestic game, playing for the Titans and the Lions, and had a spell in English county cricket with Lancashire. He made his international debut in 2011 in T20 cricket and was a regular in the limited-overs sides before gaining a Test spot.
His Test debut came in Adelaide in late 2012, and he made his name there in dramatic fashion.
Du Plessis was a right-handed batter admired for his calm temperament and strong defence, with enough skill to accelerate when needed. He was also an outstanding fielder, particularly in the covers and in the outfield, and he could play across formats.
On debut against Australia at Adelaide in November 2012, he scored a century and helped South Africa save the Test, a rearguard which became a highlight of his career. He went on to play 69 Tests and scored 4,163 runs in the format, as of the end of 2024. He retired from Test cricket in 2021 after a long stretch as a senior member of the side.
He captained South Africa in all three formats at various stages, leading the Test side in the second half of the 2010s. He was also an important performer in the Indian Premier League, where he played for Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers, among others, and he also took part in several franchise leagues around the world.
Du Plessis is generally remembered as a gritty and consistent batter who stood out for his composure under pressure. His career spanned the end of South Africa’s long era of dominance and the later transition period, and he remains a prominent figure in the global T20 circuit.
