Gavaskar Calls India’s T20I Series Loss in Ireland One of Their Worst Days

Sunil Gavaskar blames complacency and poor discipline for India’s historic T20I series defeat in Ireland, comparing the batting mindset to the 1983 final.

Sunil Gavaskar has been scathing about India’s T20I series defeat in Ireland, labelling it one of the worst days in the country’s cricket history.

Led by Shreyas Iyer, India lost the opening game by 34 runs and then went down by a single run in Belfast, giving Ireland their first bilateral T20I series win over India.

Complacency, not Irish brilliance

In his Sportstar column, Gavaskar argued the result hurt because Ireland did not have to play extraordinary cricket. In his view India handed the hosts an edge through complacency and a lack of discipline. Defeats are part of sport, he suggested, but losing to Ireland pointed to a poor attitude rather than outstanding opposition.

Echoes of 1983

He likened the batting to the 1983 World Cup final, when heavily favoured West Indies were beaten by India. The Indian batters in Ireland, he said, showed similar overconfidence and did not adapt to the match situation or the conditions.

Gavaskar also noted that the players had spent the 2026 T20 World Cup and the 2026 IPL on batting-friendly surfaces. In Belfast there was extra pace and bounce, but India kept playing aggressively, and Ireland’s disciplined bowling and sharp fielding took advantage.

The loss has prompted widespread criticism of India’s approach, and Gavaskar’s remarks add to the debate over the team’s mindset and adaptability.
