Perth Stadium (Optus Stadium): History, Pitch and Cricket Matches

A guide to Perth Stadium, also known as Optus Stadium, covering its opening, capacity, pace-friendly pitch, home teams and international cricket.

Perth Stadium, commercially known as Optus Stadium, is a large multi-purpose venue in the Burswood area of Perth, on the banks of the Swan River. It opened in 2018 and has become the main stage for international cricket in Western Australia, taking over that role from the WACA Ground.

History

The stadium was built as part of a major project to give Perth a modern venue for cricket, Australian Rules football and other events. It opened in January 2018, and its first Test match was played in December 2019, between Australia and New Zealand. It has since hosted further Tests, one-day and T20 internationals, including matches at the 2022 T20 World Cup.

The stadium

With a capacity of around 60,000, Perth Stadium is among the largest venues in Australia. Its bowl design offers views of the city skyline and the river, and it has modern facilities for spectators and players. The Perth Scorchers, one of the Big Bash League’s most successful sides, play their home matches here, as do Western Australia’s domestic teams.

Pitch

The cricket pitch at Perth Stadium was built to carry on the character of the old WACA surface, which was known for pace and bounce. Fast bowlers generally find it helpful, particularly early in a match, and batters who are able to play on the front foot can score well once set. Spinners tend to have a less prominent role than on slower grounds.

Conditions

Perth is known for its warm and sunny summers, and a sea breeze known as the Fremantle Doctor often arrives in the afternoons, which can help bowlers. Matches are often played in hot conditions, and the long boundaries and bounce reward attacking cricket.

Legacy

Although it is a recent addition to the list of major cricket stadiums, Perth Stadium has quickly become an important venue for Australian cricket. It has retained Perth’s reputation as a fast and bouncy venue while offering a much more modern setting for the sport.
