Greenfield International Stadium, Thiruvananthapuram: Ground Guide
An introduction to Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala’s main international ground and site of India’s record 317-run ODI win.
Overview
Greenfield International Stadium, also known as the Sports Hub, is located in the Kariavattom area of Thiruvananthapuram. It was developed for the 2015 National Games and soon became the leading international cricket venue in Kerala, replacing older grounds in the state.
It is also a home venue for the Kerala team in domestic cricket.
Pitch and conditions
The surface is generally regarded as a good one for batting, with decent bounce and a quick outfield, while the humid coastal weather and heavy seasonal rain play a large part in scheduling. Seamers can get some help when the ball is new and cloud cover hangs over the ground.
Memorable matches
The first international at the ground was a Twenty20 between India and New Zealand in November 2017, which was reduced to eight overs a side by rain and won by India.
In November 2018 Virat Kohli scored 157 not out as India beat West Indies by nine wickets in an ODI. In January 2023 India beat Sri Lanka by 317 runs here, the largest winning margin by runs in men’s ODI history at that time, with centuries from Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli.
Wider importance
Kerala has produced several international players, and the stadium gives the state a modern base for high-profile fixtures. Rain delays are common, but the passionate local support is widely noted by visiting teams.
