HPCA Stadium, Dharamsala: Cricket Ground in the Himalayan Foothills

A profile of the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala, known for its Dhauladhar mountain backdrop, fast-bowling pitch and Tests against Australia and England.

Overview

The Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala is frequently described as one of the most scenic cricket grounds in the world. It lies in the foothills of the Himalayas, with the snow-capped Dhauladhar range rising behind the stands, and it sits at a height of well over a thousand metres above sea level.

It is the home of Himachal Pradesh cricket and has been used for international fixtures since the early 2010s.

Pitch and conditions

The altitude, the cool air and the grassy outfield give the ground a different character from most Indian venues. Fast bowlers often find carry and early movement, and the ball can fly to the boundary quickly. Weather is an important factor: mist, cloud and rain can interrupt play, and cold mornings can favour the bowlers.

Memorable matches

India played an ODI against England here in January 2013, one of the first major internationals at the venue. In March 2017 the ground hosted its first Test, the series decider between India and Australia, which India won.

The stadium staged matches during the 2023 men’s ODI World Cup, including the meeting of India and New Zealand, and it hosted a Test between India and England in March 2024, which India won by an innings.

Franchise and domestic cricket

Dharamsala has also been used for Indian Premier League matches by a Punjab-based franchise, and for domestic competitions, drawing visitors keen on the setting as much as the cricket. Details of future fixtures should be checked with the relevant boards.

Does the pitch help fast bowlers?

Often, because of the grass cover, altitude and cooler conditions, although the surface can also play well for batters once the ball is old.
