West Indies Cricket Team: History, Governing Body and Major Honours
Profile of the West Indies cricket team: a combined Caribbean side, Cricket West Indies, the 1975 and 1979 World Cups, the 1980s era and two T20 titles.
The West Indies cricket team is unusual in world sport because it represents not a single country but a group of Caribbean territories. Players are drawn from nations and territories such as Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana and the Leeward and Windward Islands. The side is governed by Cricket West Indies and has a rich history of flair and success.
Beginnings
The West Indies played its first Test match against England at Lord’s in June 1928, which made the team the fourth nation to play Test cricket. The early years brought gradual progress, and a landmark came in 1950 when the team won a Test series in England for the first time, helped by the spin pair Sonny Ramadhin and Alf Valentine and the batters known as the Three Ws: Frank Worrell, Everton Weekes and Clyde Walcott.
The age of dominance
In the 1970s and 1980s the team under Clive Lloyd and then Viv Richards became the strongest in the world. The side went about fifteen years without losing a Test series, from 1980 to 1995, and was marked by a battery of fast bowlers such as Michael Holding, Andy Roberts, Malcolm Marshall, Joel Garner and Courtney Walsh. Batters including Gordon Greenidge, Desmond Haynes and Richards completed a team that dominated the game.
World Cups
The West Indies won the first two ODI World Cups, in 1975 and 1979, both in England, and reached the final again in 1983, losing to India. They won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2004 in England. In Twenty20 cricket the team won the T20 World Cup in 2012 in Sri Lanka and again in 2016 in India, when Carlos Brathwaite hit four sixes in a row in the final over to beat England.
Decline and challenges
From the late 1990s the team’s results in Test cricket declined, as a result of disputes over finances, competition from other sports and the demands of franchise leagues. In 2023 the team failed to qualify for the ODI World Cup in India, for the first time in the tournament’s history, after losing in the qualifying event in Zimbabwe.
Caribbean cricket today
The Caribbean Premier League, launched in 2013, has given local players a prominent platform, while domestic competitions are played between regional teams. The West Indies also took part as a co-host of the 2024 T20 World Cup together with the United States.
