Zimbabwe Cricket Team: History, Milestones and Profile
Profile of the Zimbabwe men’s cricket team: Test debut in 1992, famous World Cup upsets, the 2019 ICC suspension and home grounds in Harare and Bulawayo.
Zimbabwe’s men’s cricket team has a long and eventful history, marked by giant-killing wins, a period of strong performances in the 1990s and several years of administrative and financial difficulty. The team remains a source of national pride in a country where cricket has deep roots.
Early years and Test status
Zimbabwe first appeared at the World Cup in 1983, the same tournament in which they produced one of the great upsets by beating Australia at Trent Bridge. Duncan Fletcher starred with an unbeaten 69 and a four-wicket haul in that match. As an Associate team they continued to compete in global tournaments, and in 1992 they were granted Test status, playing their first Test against India in Harare in October that year.
The golden era
The 1990s are often seen as Zimbabwe’s strongest period, with a side containing the Flower brothers, Andy and Grant, and the fast bowler Heath Streak. At the 1999 World Cup they beat both India and South Africa, one of the standout runs in the team’s history. Zimbabwe also recorded notable results against stronger opposition in one-day cricket during this time.
Upsets in T20 cricket
At the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, Zimbabwe beat Australia in Cape Town. In the 2022 edition they beat Pakistan by one run in Perth, another result that showed the team’s ability to produce surprises.
Difficult years
The team chose to withdraw from Test cricket in 2006 and returned in 2011. In July 2019 the ICC suspended Zimbabwe Cricket for government interference in its affairs, which temporarily affected funding and participation, and the suspension was lifted in October 2019. Zimbabwe did not qualify for the 2023 ODI World Cup, having failed in the qualifying tournament they hosted.
Home grounds
Zimbabwe play home matches at Harare Sports Club and at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo, both with long traditions in the country’s cricket.
