England Cricket Team: History, Governing Body and Major Honours

Profile of the England national cricket team: the ECB, first Test in 1877, the Ashes, the 2019 ODI World Cup win and T20 World Cup titles in 2010 and 2022.

The England cricket team represents England and Wales and is governed by the England and Wales Cricket Board. As the country where the modern game was developed, England has a central place in cricket’s history and has been involved in international competition since the first Test matches in the nineteenth century.

Origins and early Tests

England played the first Test match in history against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in March 1877. In 1971 it also took part in the first one-day international, played in Melbourne after the scheduled Test was abandoned because of rain. The team has played Test cricket continuously for nearly 150 years and has hosted international fixtures at grounds such as Lord’s, the Oval, Old Trafford, Headingley and Edgbaston.

The Ashes

The great rivalry of English cricket is with Australia in the Ashes, a Test series contested since 1882. The trophy is a small urn, which stays at Lord’s regardless of who holds the Ashes. The 2005 series, won 2–1 by England, is widely remembered as one of the most thrilling in the history of the contest. The 2019 Ashes was drawn 2–2, with Australia retaining the urn.

World Cup breakthroughs

England had reached three ODI World Cup finals without winning before 2019. That year, on home soil, it won the tournament for the first time with a dramatic final against New Zealand at Lord’s, decided by a Super Over after both the match and the Super Over finished level. England won on boundary count. England also won the T20 World Cup in 2010 in the Caribbean and again in 2022 in Australia, beating Pakistan in the final in Melbourne.

Style of play

Since around 2015 England have developed an attacking approach in white-ball cricket, and from 2022 a similar positive style in Tests became known by the nickname Bazball. The approach has changed expectations about how Test matches can be played and drawn large crowds to venues.

The domestic game includes the County Championship, the T20 Blast and the Hundred, which began in 2021. England has long been a major commercial centre of the sport, and Lord’s, home of the Marylebone Cricket Club, is known worldwide as the home of cricket.
