Durban’s Super Giants are the SA20 franchise representing the coastal city of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal. The team is owned by the RPSG Group, which also owns the Indian Premier League side Lucknow Super Giants.

Origins

SA20 launched in January 2023 with six teams, each bought by an owner with an IPL connection. The RPSG Group took the Durban franchise, which was formed in 2022. The team’s name, with the possessive “Durban’s”, is unusual among franchise sides and has become a distinctive part of its identity. It is part of the owner’s wider cricket portfolio, which also includes teams in other leagues.

Home ground

The team plays at Kingsmead in Durban, a long-established international venue near the Indian Ocean coast. Kingsmead has staged Test cricket since the 1920s and is known for conditions that can assist seam bowlers early and become more favourable to batters later, with humidity and the sea air playing a part.

Results

In the second SA20 season in 2024, Durban’s Super Giants reached the final. They were beaten there by Sunrisers Eastern Cape, who retained the title they had won in 2023. As of 2024, the franchise has not won the SA20 championship.

Role and legacy

The franchise gives KwaZulu-Natal a presence in the country’s biggest franchise competition and brings the large local cricket community into the league. Like other SA20 sides, it assembles its squad through an auction process and wildcard selections, mixing overseas stars and South African players.
