A profile of Michael Clarke, the stylish Australian batter and captain who led his country to the 2015 World Cup, covering his career and legacy.
Michael Clarke was one of Australia’s leading batters of the 2000s and 2010s and later captained the national side. Born in Liverpool, New South Wales, in 1981, he combined technical polish with an attacking approach to the game.
Clarke came through the New South Wales system as a young talent and made his Test debut in India in 2004, scoring a century at Bangalore. That innings made him an early star, and he remained a regular in the Australian side across all formats.
Clarke was a fluent right-handed middle-order batter with excellent footwork, especially against spin. He could attack with strokes through the off side and played with confidence against both pace and spin. He also bowled left-arm spin and was a safe fielder.
Clarke succeeded Ricky Ponting as Test captain in 2011. He was widely praised for his tactical aggression, and he led Australia to a 5–0 Ashes victory in 2013–14. He also captained the team to victory at the 2015 World Cup, which was played in Australia and New Zealand.
His highest Test score was an unbeaten 329 against India at Sydney in January 2012, which is among the highest scores by an Australian in Tests. Over 115 Tests he scored 8,643 runs with 28 centuries at an average of about 49 (as of the end of 2024). Persistent back problems affected him in his later years.
Clarke retired from Test cricket at the end of the 2015 Ashes tour of England, having already stepped away from one-day internationals following the World Cup.
Clarke is remembered as a gifted batter and an adventurous captain. After retiring he worked as a commentator and broadcaster, and he has remained involved in cricket media and discussion.
