AnalysisSteve Waugh: Rohit Sharma Must Prove His Hunger for 2027 World Cup
Steve Waugh says skill alone will not get a 40-year-old Rohit Sharma to the 2027 ODI World Cup; desire and preparation will decide it.
A profile of Mark Waugh, the stylish Australian batter and superb slip fielder, covering his career, playing style, highlights and legacy.
Mark Waugh was one of the most graceful batters of his era. Born in Sydney in 1965, he is the twin brother of Steve Waugh, and the pair were central to the strong Australian sides of the 1990s and early 2000s.
Waugh made his name for New South Wales and in English county cricket with Essex before breaking into the Australian Test side in 1991. He announced himself immediately with a century on debut against England at Adelaide, a performance that set the tone for a long and admired career.
Waugh’s batting was defined by timing rather than power. He played with a loose-wristed elegance, and his strokes through the off side and on the on side seemed effortless. He was equally effective as an opener in one-day cricket, where he used the early fielding restrictions to full effect. In the field he was among the best slip catchers of his generation, and he also bowled useful medium pace and off-spin.
Over 128 Tests between 1991 and 2002 he scored 8,029 runs, including 20 centuries, at an average a little above 41 (figures as of the end of 2024). He was part of the Australian squads that won the 1987 and 1999 World Cups, and he was among the leading batters at the 1996 tournament, where he scored several centuries. He also took more than a hundred Test catches, mostly at slip.
Together with Steve Waugh, Mark helped build the sense of dominance that characterised Australian cricket in this era. His partnerships with his brother, particularly in the middle order, were often decisive.
Waugh was inducted into Australian cricket’s Hall of Fame and is frequently praised for making batting look easy. After retiring he worked as a commentator and coach, including a spell as a national selector. Many fans of the era still regard him as the most stylish Australian batter of his time.
