James Anderson: Profile of England’s Record-Breaking Seamer

A career profile of James Anderson, the Lancashire swing bowler who took 704 Test wickets, the most by any fast bowler in history.

James Anderson is England’s most prolific Test bowler and the most successful fast bowler in the history of the format. Across a career that lasted more than two decades he was the master of seam and swing, and his longevity at the top level was one of the most remarkable aspects of his career.

Early life and rise

Born in Burnley in 1982, Anderson came through the ranks at Burnley Cricket Club and Lancashire. He made his ODI debut for England in 2002 and his Test debut in May 2003 against Zimbabwe at Lord’s. His early years were mixed, but he gradually refined his skills and became a consistent international bowler.

Playing style

Anderson’s trademark was his control of the swinging ball. He could bring it in to right-handers or move it away, using a wrist position that gave him accuracy and subtle changes of angle. Later in his career he added a more orthodox seam-up approach and developed the ability to bowl effectively with the old ball as well as the new one.

Career highlights

Anderson played 188 Tests, the second-highest number in history after Sachin Tendulkar’s 200, and took 704 wickets, behind only the spinners Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne. No other fast bowler has taken as many Test wickets. He was a central part of the England teams that won Ashes series in 2009, 2010–11 and 2013, including the series win in Australia in 2010–11.

He also played 194 ODIs and took 269 wickets, playing 19 T20 internationals as well. In domestic cricket he played for Lancashire throughout his career.

Retirement and legacy

Anderson played his final Test in July 2024 at Lord’s against the West Indies, bringing the curtain down on a career that began in 2003. His longevity was linked to a careful approach to fitness and an obsessive attention to detail in preparation.

He is likely to be remembered as one of the great seam bowlers in the sport’s history. Career totals above are as of the end of 2024.
