The 2026 Lanka Premier League begins at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo, with Jaffna Kings playing Galle Marvels in the opening match. The evening start brings warm, humid conditions and a slight chance of a shower.
Jaffna Kings are the defending champions and have won four titles, the most of any team in the competition. Bhanuka Rajapaksa leads a squad with several new faces. Avishka Fernando and Ibrahim Zadran, who has scored 1,144 runs over the past year, are expected at the top, with Nuwanidu Fernando, Kamil Mishara, Rajapaksa, David Wiese and Dunith Wellalage behind them.
The bowling could be tougher than last season. Lizaad Williams and Dilshan Madushanka share the new ball, while Sandeep Lamichhane, who has taken 30 wickets in the last 12 months, and Kugathas Mathulan look to control the middle overs.
The pitch is expected to slow a little in the second innings, so chasing 170 or fewer looks manageable. Our preview picks Jaffna Kings to start their title defence with a victory. We have not listed a probable XI for either side, as the Marvels line-up is unclear.
