Retired Stokes Throws Full Support Behind Harry Brook as Next England Test Captain

Ben Stokes says Harry Brook has his full backing as England Test captain, with the ECB due to decide before the August series against Pakistan.

Ben Stokes has named Harry Brook as the man he wants to succeed him as England Test captain. Stokes retired from international cricket after England’s 2-1 series defeat to New Zealand, and the ECB must appoint a new Test captain before the next red-ball series, against Pakistan in August.

Succession by Design

Stokes said there was a reason Brook was made vice-captain. He admitted there had been controversy over some recent decisions but said he had not been involved in them. He recalled being Joe Root’s vice-captain for a long time and called it a natural progression: if the captain is unavailable, the vice-captain steps in. In an interview quoted by Cricinfo, he saw no reason why Brook should not take over.

He also played down the idea that recent captaincy arrangements should affect the choice, saying Brook had already shown the qualities needed for Test cricket.

Experience and Leadership

Stokes praised Brook’s maturity and standing in the group, even though the Yorkshire batter has played only 38 Tests. Added responsibility, he said, could bring out even more from a player of his talent, and he gave Brook his 100% support.

Brook, 26, became white-ball captain last year, replacing Jos Buttler, and will lead England in the five-match T20I series against India from July 1.

Other Options

With the Pakistan series not due until mid-August, the ECB has time. Reportedly under consideration alongside Brook are Joe Root, Jacob Bethell, Ben Duckett and former vice-captain Ollie Pope.
