Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, Nagpur: Ground History and Facts
A look at the VCA Stadium in Jamtha, Nagpur, home of Vidarbha cricket and host of Tests, World T20 matches and the 2023 India-Australia opener.
Overview
The Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium at Jamtha, on the outskirts of Nagpur, opened in 2008 as a modern replacement for the older VCA ground in the city centre. It is the home of the Vidarbha team in domestic cricket and one of the main venues in central India.
Its first Test, played in November 2008, saw India beat Australia in a match that closed that series.
Pitch and conditions
The black-soil surfaces here have traditionally taken turn as a Test progresses, and the heat and dry conditions often assist the spinners. In limited-overs cricket the pitch can be slow, and chasing sides have to rely on timing rather than power. Summer temperatures are very high, so scheduling matters.
Memorable matches
During the 2016 men’s T20 World Cup, New Zealand beat India here on a turning pitch, with Mitchell Santner taking four wickets. In February 2023 the ground hosted the opening Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which India won by an innings and 132 runs.
It has also hosted matches in other major tournaments, including the World Cup.
Domestic success
Vidarbha won the Ranji Trophy in 2017-18 and again in 2018-19, giving the ground a proud domestic chapter alongside its international role.
