Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Rajkot: History and Highlights

A guide to the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot, home of Saurashtra and venue of India’s record 434-run Test win in 2024.

Overview

The Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, often called Khandheri after its location on the outskirts of Rajkot, opened in 2008. It is the main ground of the Saurashtra team and has since been renamed in honour of former administrator Niranjan Shah, so it is also known as the Niranjan Shah Stadium.

The stadium has become a regular venue for international cricket in Gujarat.

Pitch and conditions

The surfaces here are generally flat and good for batting, especially early in a game, and the outfield is quick. Spinners may find some help later in a Test. The dry climate and the sun generally produce favourable batting conditions in the afternoon.

Memorable matches

In December 2009 India beat Sri Lanka by three wickets in an ODI at Rajkot, chasing 411 in a match that produced more than 800 runs. The ground’s first Test was played against England in November 2016 and was drawn.

In October 2018 India beat West Indies by an innings and 272 runs here, with Prithvi Shaw making a hundred on debut. In February 2024 India beat England by 434 runs, the largest winning margin by runs in Test history, with Ravindra Jadeja and Yashasvi Jaiswal among the century-makers.

Domestic success

Saurashtra won the Ranji Trophy in 2019-20, and the ground is a source of pride for local cricket followers. Rajkot is also home to Cheteshwar Pujara, who came through the Saurashtra system.
