Viv Richards Profile: The Swagger and Power of a West Indian Great

Profile of Sir Viv Richards, the Antiguan batter who led West Indies through an unbeaten run of Test series and scored a 56-ball Test century in 1986.

Sir Vivian Richards was the most dominant batter of his era and the captain of one of the strongest teams in cricket history. Born in Antigua in 1952, he combined brute power with a regal presence at the crease and played a central role in the West Indies’ long period of success.

Early life and rise

Richards grew up in St John’s, Antigua, and made his Test debut against India in 1974. His breakthrough year was 1976, when he scored more than 1,700 Test runs in a calendar year, including 291 against England at The Oval, a record at that time.

Playing style

He batted without a helmet for most of his career and, standing tall, used his strong forearms and exceptional hand-eye coordination to hit the ball with great force. He attacked from the first ball and was particularly strong against fast bowling. He also bowled off-spin and was an excellent fielder.

Career highlights

Richards scored 8,540 Test runs in 121 matches at an average above 50, with 24 centuries. In one-day internationals, he scored 189 not out against England at Old Trafford in 1984, an innings that remained a record for a long time. In 1986, he hit a Test century off 56 balls against England in Antigua, the fastest in terms of balls faced at that time.

He was part of the West Indies teams that won the 1975 and 1979 World Cups, and in the 1979 final at Lord’s he made an unbeaten 138. He captained the side from 1984 to 1991, a period in which West Indies did not lose a Test series.

County and overseas cricket

In English cricket, he spent many years at Somerset and also played for Glamorgan, and he played for Queensland in Australia.

Legacy

Richards was knighted in 1999 and is a member of the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame. His influence on the way batters approach the game remains strong. Career totals are quoted as at his retirement in 1991.
