NewsMatthew Hayden Backs Dinesh Karthik as a Future CSK Coach
With CSK seeking a successor to Stephen Fleming, Matthew Hayden says Dinesh Karthik’s Chennai roots and coaching experience make him a strong option.
A profile of Matthew Hayden, the imposing Australian left-handed opener, covering his career, 380 against Zimbabwe, playing style and legacy.
Matthew Hayden was one of the most commanding opening batters of the modern era. Born in 1971 in Kingaroy, Queensland, he built a reputation for physical strength, relentless concentration and an ability to dominate bowling attacks.
Hayden scored heavily for Queensland and made his Test debut for Australia in 1994, but his early international career was uneven and he was dropped. He rebuilt his game, spent time playing county cricket in England, and returned to the Test side in 2001 with renewed confidence, soon becoming an indispensable part of the team.
A big, left-handed opener, Hayden was known for his aggressive front-foot approach and his readiness to attack spin and pace alike. He advanced down the pitch to bowlers and played powerful straight drives, but he was also a determined accumulator who could bat for long periods. He regularly formed memorable opening partnerships with Justin Langer.
The 2001 series in India was a turning point; Hayden scored heavily and established himself as one of the world’s best players of spin. In October 2003 he scored 380 against Zimbabwe at Perth, then the highest individual Test score, a mark later passed by Brian Lara. He was the leading run-scorer at the 2007 World Cup, which Australia won.
Hayden finished with 103 Tests, 8,625 runs and 30 centuries at an average above 50 (as of the end of 2024). He retired from international cricket in 2009 and continued to play in franchise leagues, including for Chennai Super Kings.
Hayden is remembered as a central figure in the Australian teams that dominated world cricket in the early 2000s. His partnership with Langer is often rated among the best opening pairs in Test history. He later moved into commentary and coaching roles and is respected for his focus and his work ethic.
