Profile of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, the Meerut-born swing bowler who opened India’s attack across formats and won two IPL Purple Caps with Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar is one of the finest swing bowlers India has produced. Relying on accuracy and control of movement rather than raw speed, he has been a dependable new-ball option for his country, and he is also a capable lower-order batter.
Born in Meerut in 1990, Bhuvneshwar played domestic cricket for Uttar Pradesh. He made an impression with his ability to move the ball in both directions, and was given his international debut in December 2012 in a T20 International against Pakistan.
A right-arm fast-medium bowler, Bhuvneshwar was at his most dangerous with the new ball, producing late swing into and away from batters and using a good wobble seam. In later years he developed useful variations at the death, including slower balls and yorkers. As a batter he scored valuable runs from the lower order, and was capable of fifties in domestic and international cricket.
He has represented India in Tests, One Day Internationals and T20 Internationals. As of the end of 2024 he had played 21 Tests, 121 ODIs and 87 T20 Internationals. In T20 Internationals he is among the leading wicket-takers for India.
In the Indian Premier League, Bhuvneshwar was part of the Sunrisers Hyderabad side that won the title in 2016, and he won the Purple Cap, awarded to the leading wicket-taker, in both 2016 and 2017. Earlier in his career he also played for Royal Challengers and Pune Warriors.
His career has been affected by injuries at times, which has limited his appearances in the longer formats. He has nevertheless continued to return to the side, valued for his skill with the new ball and for his experience in white-ball cricket.
Bhuvneshwar’s success showed that precise swing bowling can remain effective in an era dominated by pace and power-hitting. He is regarded as one of India’s most skilful white-ball new-ball bowlers.
He made his international debut in December 2012 in a T20 International against Pakistan.
He won the Purple Cap in two consecutive seasons, 2016 and 2017, with Sunrisers Hyderabad.
He is a right-arm fast-medium bowler who is known for swing with the new ball.
