The United Arab Emirates beat Oman by 42 runs at the ICC Academy in Dubai on 4 November, defending 226 for 8 and holding Oman to 184 for 9 across their 50 overs. It was the UAE’s final fixture in the Cricket World Cup League 2 and the last of six matches in a Dubai tri-series that also featured the Netherlands.
Oman won the toss and chose to bowl. Adeeb Usmani made 47 off 53 balls and Rahul Chopra 47 off 79, while Basil Hameed added 43 off 45 and was named player of the match. Shakeel Ahmed was Oman’s most successful bowler with 3 for 42 from his 10 overs, and Hassnain Shah took 2 for 53.
Oman’s chase lost momentum early. Jatinder Singh was out for 3 off 20 balls, Aamir Kaleem for 12 and Karan Sonavale for 5, and captain Vinayak Shukla made 10. Mujibur Ali held the innings together with 65 off 84 balls before he was caught by Chopra off Khuzaima Tanveer. Four UAE bowlers took two wickets each: Muhammad Rohid (2 for 21 in seven overs), Tanveer (2 for 21 in seven), Awais Ali Shah (2 for 27 in 10) and Aayan Afzal Khan (2 for 31 in nine), with Hameed taking the other wicket.
Three wins each for the UAE and the Netherlands
The UAE and the Netherlands finished the Dubai series with three wins apiece, while Oman lost all four of their matches. The Netherlands opened with a three-wicket win over the UAE on 25 October, then beat Oman by 106 runs on 27 October and by seven wickets on 2 November. The UAE beat Oman by four wickets on 29 October, with Awais Ali Shah taking 5 for 33.
The UAE’s best result came on 31 October, when they chased 264 against the Netherlands to win by five wickets with six balls to spare. Akshdeep Nath, a 33-year-old former India Under-19 World Cup winner who moved to the UAE this year, made 99 off 88 balls with five fours and four sixes before he was given lbw to Netherlands captain Bas de Leede. Usmani made 81 in the same chase, after Max O’Dowd (106 off 119) and Scott Edwards (94 off 95) had taken the Netherlands to 263 for 4. Nath, named player of the match, said playing international cricket for the UAE was “a dream come true”.
Play-off next
Even before the Oman match, the UAE were certain to finish bottom of the League 2 table; the win over the Netherlands had been only their 10th in 35 matches in the competition. Their route to the 2027 World Cup now runs through the eight-team Qualifier Play-off in Nepal in December, where one-day internationals will decide the four sides that go through to the ten-team World Cup Qualifier. Jersey and Kuwait have already earned places in that event from Challenge League A.
