Mohit Sharma Faults CSK’s Bowling Plans in Defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad

Mohit Sharma says CSK’s bowlers misread the slow Chepauk surface and leaned on yorkers while SRH used variations, chasing 181 with an over left.

Mohit Sharma has criticised the way Chennai Super Kings bowled in their defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad at Chepauk, saying the attack failed to adapt to the conditions.

How the chase unfolded

Defending 181, CSK started well and held SRH to 45 in the powerplay. The middle overs turned the match, though. Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen added 75 from 41 balls, which put Hyderabad firmly in charge, and SRH reached the target with an over to spare.

Mohit’s analysis

Mohit said CSK’s bowlers did not read the surface or change their lengths, whereas the SRH bowlers made good use of slower balls all innings. By his count, around 60 to 65 percent of SRH’s deliveries were variations, which he felt was decisive on a slow pitch.

He said Chennai had no clear plan and relied too much on yorkers rather than hard lengths and cutters suited to the surface. Mukesh Choudhary and Anshul Kamboj, he added, are capable of using variations but did not deliver what the conditions demanded, allowing the SRH batters to dominate.

The figures

The pair conceded 82 runs in their eight overs between them, though they shared three wickets. Kamboj had another costly game after his previous outing against Lucknow Super Giants, when he gave away 63 runs in 2.4 overs.
