Nathan Lyon is the most successful off-spinner Australia has produced in Test cricket. A right-arm off-break bowler and right-handed lower-order batter, he has been a fixture in the Australian Test side since his debut in 2011, and his workload on pitches around the world has made him one of the sport’s most durable spinners.
Early life and rise
Nathan Michael Lyon was born on 20 November 1987 in Young, New South Wales. He began in the ACT Comets set-up (2008/09 to 2010/11), then played for South Australia (2010/11 to 2012/13) and later New South Wales, whom he has represented since 2013/14. He made his Test debut on 31 August 2011 against Sri Lanka. His ODI debut followed on 8 March 2012 against Sri Lanka and his T20I debut on 29 January 2016 against India.
Playing style
Lyon relies on accuracy, bounce and patience rather than extravagant turn. He is used for long spells, often bowling to hold one end and to take wickets as the pitch wears. In the field he has taken catches regularly; Cricket Australia’s profile lists 69 Test catches. As a batter he generally bats low in the order.

- He took 8 wickets for 50 against India in March 2017, described by Wikipedia as the best figures by a visiting bowler in India.
